With full of confidence, Topsham 2nds went to Wessex expecting a win and they were not disappointed. The pattern of the game was set in the opening moments of the first half with Topsham forwards taking control. Hlafway through the first half the stalemate was broken when Wessex broke away from a ruck with misses tackles scored under the post with a converted try.
After this setback Topsham started to regain the upper hand and this proved to be the turning point as Topsham were level from a set piece controlled and with good play and half backs linking, Ian Jones and Dean Bywood with Dean breaking the Wessex defence and scoring under the post, the conversion being completed by Nathan Clark. The lead was gained again by good forward work linking well with backs for Dean to scamper into the corner for his second try. Continuing with their dominence Wessex were forced to concede a penalty in the final minutes of the half and gratefully accepted by Nathan Clark Topsham turning round the half 15 to 7 to the good.
Changes made at half time Wessex began the better side but did not threaten, and as time went on Topsham began to settle and were rewarded near the oppositions line with Dean completing his hat-trick through a defensive error. Wessex were now beaten we thought!! however Topsham relaxed and oaid the penalty with Wessex scoring a converted try making the last few moments a nail biting time. The game was soured by the sending off of a Wessex player in the last minute resulting in a penalty which completed the game with a victory for Topsham.
