Team Coach – Role Description
NC2 South West (West) – Community Rugby Club

Role Purpose:
To lead the coaching, development, and on field performance of the Topsham Tempests Women’s rugby team, who currently compete in NC2 South West (West). The coach will create and maintain a positive, inclusive, and competitive environment that supports player development, strengthens team cohesion, and upholds the values of community rugby. The role ensures high quality training, safe practice, and effective match day leadership.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Coaching & Player Development
• Plan and deliver structured, progressive training sessions aligned to the RFU Women & Girls coaching framework.
• Develop players of mixed experience levels, from new-to-rugby athletes to experienced competitors.
• Provide individual feedback, skill development plans, and position specific coaching.
• Promote safe, technically correct contact skills and conditioning appropriate for adult female players.
• Foster a growth mindset and supportive team culture.

2. Match Day Leadership
• Select the match day squad in collaboration with team captains and team manager.
• Lead warm ups, tactical preparation, and in game decision making.
• Review match performance and provide constructive feedback to players and leadership group.
• Ensure compliance with RFU regulations, front row requirements, and player welfare protocols.

3. Player Welfare & Safeguarding
• Champion a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all players.
• Work with the Club Safeguarding Officer to ensure adherence to RFU safeguarding standards.
• Monitor player workload, injuries, and return to play processes in partnership with physio/first aid staff.
• Promote mental wellbeing, positive team behaviours, and supportive communication.

4. Team Operations & Coordination
• Work closely with the Women’s Team Manager on logistics, communication, and fixture management.
• Contribute to recruitment and retention of players, including outreach to local universities, colleges, and community groups.
• Support integration between senior women, girls’ age grade pathways, and wider club activity.
• Attend relevant club meetings, coaching forums, and development sessions.

5. Club Values & Culture
• Model the club’s values on and off the field.
• Encourage a welcoming, inclusive environment for new players and returning players.
• Promote positive relationships with match officials, opposition teams, and volunteers.
• Support club events, fundraising, and community engagement where appropriate.

Person Specification:
Essential
• Experience coaching rugby union (women’s rugby experience preferred).
• RFU Coaching Award (Level 2) or working towards it.
• Strong communication, motivation, and leadership skills.
• Ability to coach mixed ability groups with empathy and clarity.
• Commitment to player welfare, safeguarding, and inclusive practice.
• Availability for evening training sessions and weekend fixtures.

Desirable:
• Experience coaching adult female teams or senior rugby.
• Knowledge of the competition structure and RFU regulations.
• Strength & conditioning awareness relevant to female athletes.
• First Aid qualification (or willingness to obtain).
• Ability to analyse match footage and provide tactical insights.
Time Commitment
• 1–2 evening training sessions per week.
• Weekend match days (home and away).
• Occasional club meetings, coach development sessions, and events.
Measures of Success
• Consistent player recruitment, retention, and development.
• Improved team performance and competitiveness in league rugby.
• Positive player feedback on coaching quality and team culture.
• Strong adherence to welfare, safety, and safeguarding standards.
• Visible contribution to the growth and sustainability of women’s rugby within the club.
