What a win! Tops edge a pulsating clash with Farnham to seal a cup final clash with Lutterworth at Twickenham! It was a brilliant contest between us and our visitors from Surrey. A nervy first ten saw Farnham take a 0-5 lead with a score in the corner. We settled and built ourselves a platform enjoying a period of pressure that saw us convert a number of red zone entries into points. First two Mattin penalties nervelessly slotted and then a Christian Edbrooke try. At 13-5 up we had the largest lead of the match but this didn't last long. Farnham won a penalty in front of the posts following a swift counter attack that saw us also lose Joe Cave to the bin. On the stroke of half time the visitors completed their fightback with another unconverted try in the corner.
The second half though saw the boys step up. Their defense was immaculate and although we conceded a try it was only following a sharp full length intercept by their fullback as we probed their five metre line. Understandably this was a disheartening blow and for a few minutes we wobbled. The telling moment came though on the hour mark when we pushed Farnham off their own ball at the scrum, a huge psychological boost. We put this to full use as O'Hanrahan immediately punished them with a try to narrow the gap to 18-20. Straight from the restart we built again and moments later Joe Cave scampered in to put us ahead. Farnham came again and again but couldn't find the score to level things and when Mattin milked an offside pen in our 22 the game was up. Some time still remained and a series of other penalties saw us march our way upfield until another blast of the refs whistle gave us the chance to add three and run the clock down. Mattin stroked it over for a 26-20 lead and although there was time for another kickoff it was gathered cleanly and booted out without incident. A brilliant game between two super sides fighting it out. Credit to Farnham and their supporters for playing their part in a brilliant day.
