Our 2nd XV inflicted only a second home league defeat of the season on Devonport when they won a thriller 46-48. Only run away, 100% league leaders Torquay Athletic had any success in Plymouth before this weeekend. The match was an enthralling score fest that saw our 2nd XV amass an early lead 7-28 lead before the Services roared back. It was only a few moments into the second period when a fifth score for the home team saw them turn the match on its head to lead 31-28. There was no sign of Topsham folding though and when Will Humphreys levelled things up at 31-31 from the tee it was evident this was going down to the wire. A try for us was swiftly followed by two more for them and then another by the lads. A missed conversion the difference to leave us 43-45 up. Into the final five and Devonport eaked back in front following penalty of their own but some late pressure and into the 79th minute we earned a chance to win it at the death. Another nerveless kick from the 100% Humphreys flew over and a remarkable win was ours. The win doesn't change our league standing of sixth but it does now give us a hope of catching Withycombe, five points ahead, in fifth as well as cutting us adrift of the chasing pack below.
