Torquay and Topsham never got to play each other last year at Under 16 level, but previously these matches had always been closely fought encounters.
Nothing has changed! Torquay had the better start being awarded penalty after penalty one of which was in range giving the home side a 3 – 0 lead. Topsham slowly woke up and whilst the game was fairly even in terms of territory, Topsham’s dominance at the set piece did not have the influence on the game it should have. Nevertheless, Topsham scored two good tries in the first half to Torquay’s one leading 10-12 at the break.
Topsham began the second half the stronger team and all looked well following a third try giving Topsham a 10 – 17 lead. Despite a number of clear cut opportunities Topsham were unable to increase their lead and following an interception it was Torquay who scored a converted try making it all level at 17 points a piece.
Either side could have won the game in the last 10 minutes but overall, Topsham should have closed out this game by the end of the third quarter.
An exciting game to watch but in truth, too many errors at critical moments.
We must take our chances!
