Tops secure their passage into the next round of the u17 National Cup with a dogged win at Wimborne

Despite drawing 10-10, the fact that Tops scored the first try and scored two trys to Wimbornes one and that it was an away fixture all means that Topsham win.

Wimborne are a hard team, they were up for ‘it’ and they brought ‘it’ onto the pitch but Topsham stood firm, scored first, scored last and defended aggressively.

Tops started the game playing into a biting wind and with forwards competing well at the line outs, and in the scrum and the backs showing good hands and running lines it seemed only a matter of time before the first score. Alex Taylor almost achieved it but after breaking through and reaching for the line his attempt was just short.

With Wimborne on the back foot the boys take advantage with Kieran Williams the man in possession to score off a forwards drive. The conversion into the wind drifts wide and the score is 0-5.

Wimborne get into the game and get some territory and despite not pushing in the scrum and therefore collapsing they earn the penalties one of which they decide to convert after no luck with other options, 3-5.

Tops concede more penalties finding it hard to understand the interpretations being given by the man in the middle and Wimborne take advantage by giving the ball a tap and scoring a try under the posts which is converted with the wind. 10-5 on the stroke of half time.

The second half starts and Tops get on top, they first go right and go close with Oz Martin over the line but apparently the ball held up. They regain possession and go left with Fin passing out to Tarquin who goes wide to score in the corner, of course the wind has now died in the second half so no assistance for the conversion which falls wide and the score is 10-10.

Despite Wimborne having lots of possession and playing hard ball up the middle the defence stands firm and they don’t really come close, Will Counsell makes at least three turnovers, Zac gets one, Tom Bird gets another, Oz has one as well.

However Wimborne get a penalty for a supposed offside by Tops on the half way line which is somehow then conveniently placed 15m inside Tops half and within kicking distance but its missed, ref blows for time and Tops deservedly win.

Oz Martin gets Man of the Match.

Lesson – playing away means get the score out of sight so that odd decisions don’t make any difference.
