A great start.....
Our first game was a great way to start the season, From the very start you put so much pressure on them they found it very hard to play any rugby and forced many mistakes which you capitalised on a number of times , 4 trys to 0 at half time, and the second half was much the same story apart from. 2 late tries from exmouth.
Some great attacks from the whole team , which exmouth could not cope with , matched with our strong defence left us in control of the match.
Our second game was a very different story, a much stronger team really gave us a test , again from us great pressure from the restart put them under a lot of pressure, and again forcing mistake, .
A powerful break from them and poor tackling from us let them back into the game, plus a very lucky bounce from the ball put the game at two all, Again poor defence gifted another try for exmouth , There was some fabulous breaks from us all morning, Jamie and Archie running some get lines and cut hole all morning in there defence , both scoring some great tries .
Harlans tackling was again the benchmark for our squad, cutting down anyone near him .
A very positive start, my only concern was the breakdown , our rucking was at best confused.
, a work in progress.
Well done all.
Player of the week.
He looks like he has been playing for us for years, very pleased with how he has fitted in in a new team, and he is most certainly doing his talking with his rugby which has been fabulous.
We actually started off with a bit of a hiss and a roar, hammering straight into Exmouth in both of our matches. Ed Ford loved the new rule of being able to run straight from the ruck, several times bursting right up the middle of the Exmouth defence. But we do need to be careful when we do fends (hand-offs), as a couple of players went a bit high & got penalised for it.
Will BT spent most of his day buried in every scrum, maul & ruck, tackling anything that came his way & winning us some great turnovers. A great match, starting the season as he finished it in Barnstaple last year. Very well played Will. Worthy winner of Dave the Duck.
It was great to also see the “Felix of Old” back!! Great match play, & team support followed by 2 or 3 of the best “bootlace” tackles we’ve seen in a long time!!
We seemed to actually run quite straight, as opposed to our usual “across the pitch” style. Much better options, with some lovely cutbacks being offered by William Reuben, who was absolutely outstanding on defence as well. His tackling technique is faultless & he once again topped the tackle count.
Nate was as always, right in the middle of everything, in the rucks, ripping plenty of ball for us, sending the outsides off after some great sniping runs, & tackling all day long. A well deserved Player of the Day award.
Frankie led from the front all day & it was good to see him carry on his fantastic pre-season form into the first match.
We were outdone on several occasions at some of the rucks, with too many bystanders watching their teammates get stuck in. This is definitely something we need more work on. We did play quite well as a team, & several times, one player could have scored, but unselfishly offloaded the ball for the outside player to score instead.
Our draw & pass game gave us a number of tries, but we also blew a couple of chances with overlaps our wide, & our final passes/catches were not being executed well enough.
But still for our first match of the season, we are definitely on the right track. Well done everyone.
