Wellington 12 Topsham 40
By B Jenkins
Good to be back playing
This was our first Friday fixture and our first under floodlights.
Having not played for 5 weeks it was worth the wait; 6 tries, 5 of which were converted, was an impressive return for the 16 boys that made the trip.
Thank you to the parents for getting the boys there during the holidays on Friday evening.
DJ opened the scoring and ended it with two more, earning a well-deserved hat trick. Josh scored one after an athletic take from a pop pass from Henry Butler, who was playing on the wing. Toby ran over for his after letting Rhys do all the hard work and Sam B scored an important try just before half time.
Tom’s remarkable kicking as always kept the scoreboard ticking over.
JP played his best game all season for the team, frequently first to the ball and always making the tackle. He was a real inspiration to the squad. Henry Butler now knows to expect the unexpected having been asked to play on the wing. He played very well and didn’t look out of place, making the second try for Josh. He was unlucky not to have scored himself.
Our malaise of conceding tries early in the second half returned however with Wellington scoring twice. The score for the second half was 12-14, which shows how important Tom’s conversion are and that we need to work harder on our concentration and communication after half time.
Finally, thanks to Chunks for refereeing; much appreciated by us and Wellington.
