Good game to win

Good game yesterday with a mature and controlled performance from the boys. DJ’s composure and leadership throughout ensured a good relationship with the referee and that we were talking just about the rugby at FT.

Firstly, thank you all for getting the boys there on time. It sent a strong message to the Withy players as they arrived to see 20+ Topsham players warming up and going through their drills.

Secondly thank you as always to Larry and Cheryl for ensuring we have clean cup shirts (please return ASAP if you have one at home) and full water bottles etc for every game.

The team deserves to take a lot of satisfaction from beating a very good Withycombe side. Not many teams will put three unanswered tires past them at home.

The first half was played almost totally in the Withy half. Guy was unlucky not to have been awarded a try as he was harshly judged to have received a forward pass.

As the match unfolded it was pleasing to see the mature distribution and movement of the ball being sustained. Toby and Scott seemed to be competing at one point to see who could leap the highest for any loose high balls. The deadlock was broken by Sam P, who had a storming game, after 12 mins. The team continued to press and managed a second try after 26 mins, again by Sam P.

HT 0-10.

Half time saw the Withy team assert themselves and we were forced into long phases of defence. One of our often-overlooked strengths is our defence. The forwards have now held up Withy on the line numerous times over two games, and they impressively held up Cull in the last game.

To not concede a try or penalty in our last three fixtures is as an impressive a statistic as the number of tries we’ve scored.

The backs as always were also on consistently good form in defence. Stan also showed his customary and commendable bravery, and an absence of any instinct for self-preservation, put in a huge tackle at one point that Brin would have been proud of.

Withy justifiably felt they were in with a chance of a try as the second half wore on and they kept coming at us.

Thankfully hat trick hero Sam P managed to find a way through for an impressive breakaway try, well supported by Josh. 0-15. Well done to the wingers as well for always being back to support Sam P under the high ball; Antonio, Marcus and Guy.

FT 0-15.
