Topsham 36 Ivybridge 0

A great start to the season!
Good result and demonstration on Sunday of how we want to play rugby this season in our opening fixture of the Fisherman’s Cup.
Thank you to Cesar for helping set up flags and post protectors beforehand, to Fin, JP, Lewis and Izaak for their support, plus Sam for last minute admin and help with numbered shirts to ensure we complied with the rules & regs.
It’s not an understatement to say there were some early contenders for try of the season in what was an entertaining fixture.
The game began evenly with two or three try saving tackles by Guy and Antonio on the wing, before Antonio calmed our nerves with a converted try by TK to take us in at half time 7-0.
The boys took onboard DJ’s comments at half time to avoid our notorious dip in performance in the early part of the second half. The team then proceeded to lay on a display of free flowing 15-man rugby, with the best pack on the pitch.
Tries from Sam P, Toby, Guy (with well-judged final pass from Sam B), Sam B (memorable run down the wing after we retained the ball from kick off) and Rhys saw us win 36-0.
Goggs and Rhys worked very hard in the forwards, and boys whose first instinct isn’t always to pass did so. TK and DJ laid a great show on backline play for appreciative spectators.
A good overall team performance, where forwards dominated in the second half. Communication has improved a lot, however there is still work to do in organising the forwards to function more coherently.
The ref took time to find me after the game to praise our team’s maturity, politeness and willingness to listen during the game. An Ivybridge parent also spoke to me and echoed the ref’s comments; well done all.
Last word to Casper who commendably made it in time for kick off – having been to Ivybridge first.
