Sun 7 Oct 11:00 - Friendly Full time

Topsham RFC U14s v Exmouth RFC U14s

“Topsham put on a fine display of running rugby.”

Dry conditions, with little wind, set the scene for a morning of expansive rugby on the main pitch at Topsham.

Topsham played with purpose from the outset and were rewarded with a flurry of tries in the first half of the match. Fine inter-play between forwards and backs, meant the ball was recycled at close quarters around the ruck fringes and eventually created quick ball for the backs to exploit space and gaps in the opposition defence. Controlling large passages of play, resulted in a good win against committed opposition.

As a squad, we must work hard on our discipline in all facets of the game, but especially in defence, the breakdown and broken play - support and communication being critical if we are to see continual improvement. The ball carrier must always have two support players with him in attack and defensively, we must be looking to turn every tackle situation into an attacking opportunity.

Exmouth scored out wide through good passages of passing, but this could have been prevented if our defensive press was faster and more coordinated - we must work hard and talk at all times. Defending the inside shoulder and pushing up and out is key.

Overall a good performance, building on the previous week and thanks go to Exmouth for a match played in good spirit and for an enjoyable morning of rugby.

Tries:
Ollie Smith x2
Freddie Bridger x2
