Barbarians style with Sidmouth
By Katie James
Mixing the teams resulted in a good 3 thirds of 15 minute rugby
A good morning. Rob turned up with 10 boys from Sidmouth. We immediately suggested just mixing the teams and this resulted in a good 3 thirds of 15 minute rugby. It was fast and mobile and the boys ended up blowing quite a bit towards the end of each of the thirds. Sidmouth have some powerful runners as we do but I felt overall our players shone a bit more. There was a yellow and an Orange team, both of which played some excellent rugby in the first section of play. The balance then swung a bit when the wrong player got swapped into the Orange team and it became a bit less even. Zeb and Toby combined really well in the Orange team devising a clever kick and chase cross field kick tactic for 2 tries.
As others faded in the yellow team Henry and Sam Reay took on more and more ball themselves but what we really need is better play from the team as a whole, getting steep in attack, up in defence etc. to make it work. We are beyond relying on a couple of players to make it happen, It must be a group effort now.
Of particular note were Sam R , Alexander Smart, Zeb at fly half and Hamish F. A very useful blowing of the cobwebs for all. Thanks go out to Julian Salvi who took a rucking drill for both sets of players for 15 minutes. Charlie Fraser also assisted in coaching.
