Topsham performed well at the Devon festival having been randomly drawn in the toughest of pool Groups. Within an hour of arriving Topsham’s first match was against Kingsbridge and in a fantastic performance Topsham either won the match or drew 1-all depending on whether you count a try by KB that was so late it was after the match had ended! This confusion (the referee mistakenly re-started play after Topsham kicked the ball out at full-time) did not matter in the end as first KB (5-1) and then Topsham (2-1) were beaten by a fantastic Barnstaple team who topped the group. Normally these events get tougher as the day progresses, but for Topsham’s group it was the other way around. Topsham romped through the plate group beating Crediton, Okehamption and hosts Tavistock buy 5 or 6 tries to nil. Meanwhile Barnstaple did the same in the Cup Group (albeit tested by a strong Newton Abbot team who eventually lost 3-1 in what was effectively the final) and KB – unsurprisingly – found the third tier Bowl Group relatively easy. The commitment and focus of the Topsham squad was commendable and the team displayed some of the best U13s rugby Devon can offer.
