Topsham 1sts 29-24 Cullompton 2s
Topsham's first team on Saturday won in a match in which they took an early lead of three tries, before Cullompton found their feet and came back into the game. At half time Topsham were on top and in the second half moved away from Cullompton. Cullompton then scored a break away try. Despite suggestions by the Topsham players that a knock on had occurred, Cullompton were awarded the try under the posts, which was duly converted to bring them within 2 points. Topsham scored a penalty in the final moments of the game.
After the game coach Trevor Harris was full of praise for his players saying that they had improved from the previous week. Man of the match. Scrum Half T Byrne
Honiton 2 14- 34 Topsham 2nds
A completely new Topsham 2nd team took on a strong powerful team Honiton 2 on Saturday and came away with a comfortable win. Before the game coach Neil Leech told the players that this game would be against one of the strongest teams at their level.
Topsham where playing in the first half with the wind behind them and downhill, so knew that a large lead would be needed in the first half if they were going to win.
The team first scored in the 5th minute and then another three times in the first half to make a half time score of 22 - 0. The feeling at half time was he Honiton would now use their strength. They put on the pressure in the second half and scored in the first 7 minutes. Topsham then soaked up the pressure until the 20th minute when Honiton scored again making it 22 - 14.
The Topsham players then went on the attack and scored another 2 tries and one conversion to seal the match.
Neil Leech after the game said it was a great start to the season, but their was still a lot of hard work to do in training to allow the second team to have a good season.
