It was a very difficult year for the 2nd XV as long and short term injuries and also unavailablities meant that they never really put out a strong side, particularly in the three-quarter line. Under the excellent captaincy of Lee Mottram the team never got demoralised and enjoyed their few wins with particular pleasure. But even in defeat, a handful of which were quite heavy, the team always played to their best and engaged in the old style after match drink and chatter with their opposition with great gusto.
Hopefully with possible ten players returning from long term injuries and new players already arriving and more due to be with the club before the start of next season the future is looking bright (if not Orange!). Certainly, the need for recognised three-quarters is paramount, and every effort will be made to attract players to the club.
The old adage of "a 1st XV is only as strong as the club's 2nd XV" is without doubt true, as can be seen by Cullompton's success in this Merit Table which was mirrored by their 1st XV winning promotion as well. Our aim must be to improve our standing in the Merit Table and establish a competitive team, which in time can look at getting promoted. This will be no easy task particularly as Okehampton and Wessex 2nd XV's will be in the Merit Table next season. However, committed players who are willing to work together can bring success for this team.
The committee's thanks goes to Lee and all of the players who participated this season.
